It's so tragically funny now, to know, it's your party... your republicans that will likely manifest your own worse fears BHL.

Or just maybe an acceptance that the country is more important than ideology and that there is room for regulated capitalism within a mixed economy - you know like all other civilized western economies.

Yeah, well I don't expect to live THAT long...

I dont think I agree with that at all. Too many forces to keep Capitalism afloat. Its more likely we are a Plutocracy and thus wont slip into Socialism.

All things eventually pass away. Feudalism was considered a "natural" state of being for centuries, before its foundation crumbled and modern capitalism evolved from its ruin.

I don't know what will evolve to take the place of today's crumbling capitalism. I'd like to think that it would be a more civil and humane way for all people to cooperate in solving the basic problems of the society... but the fact that people are born selfish sort of stands in the way, I expect. Still, something better suited to the realities of technology and ease of transport should come along one day.

Or we'll crash and burn the technology and live like the Amish....

Your post? I just don't know where to start or what to say and don't really think it would matter. Yes, I'm speechless.

I do think the American public is going to have to face reality in the next 15 years if we are to survive the decline of America's footprint on the world stage. Other countries have been able to handle similar transitions, but some haven't. We simply cannot have our collective arrogance be a blind mantra and get in the way of being open to the possibility that it is OK to be patriotic and love one's country while at the same time acknowledging that the glory days as we knew them are behind us.

The fact is, I don't think America will ever be the way it was. We are entering a new phase and a new economic reality. Wall Street has been convulsing because of it. They saw it coming long ago and built falsely inflated bubbles to protect itself and keep moving with the status quo. We all know how that turned out. This is what happens when you inevitably loose your manufacturing base. You have to adapt.

My fear is that with all these people wistfully looking backwards at what was, and trying to run around chasing ghosts of the past, we wont be able to progress ahead.
