The discovery of a strange creature in Cerro Azul has aroused controversy among the people, for while some say it may be a being from another planet, others simply believe that is an animal.

Four teenagers aged between 14 and 16 years, met him at the Jet Blue Hill, on Saturday, while having fun in the place.

Pretty much any animal becomes hairless when it has been in water for a few days. And it's difficult to recognise even a familiar animal that has no hair

A sloth has very distinctive claws and forearms and the face is right

So I think you're right. The story is invention and the 'monster' a sloth that has been in the water for several days

It's confirmed - a very dead sloth

National Geographic

But an autopsy has now revealed that the purported alien was actually a species of sloth that had died and started to decay before the boys' discovery.

"Most people know how a dead animal looks like in a dry environment," said AndrĂ© Sena Maia, a veterinarian at NiterĂ³i Zoo in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"The body must have got stuck under the water, and the movement of the currents gave [the boys] the false impression that it was alive."

Panamanian officials recovered the "alien" four days after the teenagers had thrown it back into the creek.

A biopsy done at the National Environmental Authority of Panama (ANAM) concluded that the creature was a male Bradypus variegates, also known as a three-toed sloth, a common species in Central and South America.

"The sloth had severe signs of trauma on its body, as shown in the necropsy," said Melquiades Ramos, a veterinarian at the ANAM Department of Protected Areas and Wild Lives.

"From the state it is shown in the pictures, we can estimate it had been in the water for about two days before being found."

It's good to see a followup story, all too often these things get left in an unconfirmed state.

Ooooh, difficult

Teens or scientists?

I think it depends on whether the question is: "How much beer does Tiffany have to drink before she'll drop them for anyone" or "What species is this animal"
