The Fate of a Country in The Hands of a Yam

by shannon | Published on November 3rd, 2010, 10:13 am | Food
Could sweet potato pie have determined the future of a country? When Christopher Columbus returned to Spain he brought home the tuber we call the sweet potato. It quickly gained popularity as an aphrodisiac and was part of the dowry from Katherine of Aragon to King Henry VIII. Henry's desperation for bearing male heirs encouraged his obsession with sweet potatoes. He would eat as many as half a dozen in a single sitting. Little did he know that sweet potatoes and yams are linked today to cause an increase in estrogen. This fact is not helpful while the male sex cell is responsible for determining a baby's sex. Ironically the King's sweet potato pie gluttony he was thinking worked like Viagra, could have actually been the reason a male heir was impossible. I will definitely think of Thanksgiving dinner differently now.

Henry had two male children

One miscarried after four months (mother Anne Boleyn) , the other was Edward VI (Jane Seymour) who succeeded Henry to the throne at the age of 9. Edward died six years after becoming king and was in turn followed by Jane, Mary and Elizabeth in rapid succession (and much bloodshed)

(edit) Sorry - three

He had a male child with Catherine too - Henry, her second child, who lived only six weeks

(Edit again). Four. He had son with Mary Boleyn, also called Henry. But because he was a bastard he couldn't be an heir
All stupid ideas pass through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is ridiculed. Third, it is ridiculed

Perhaps the chemical imbalance was responsible for his demeanor. He had PMS by his self induced over-dosage of oestradiol via potatoes, followed by withdrawals.
This is our chance to change things, this is our destiny.

It's a common characteristic of dictators.

Yams (or sweet potatoes) won't grow in Britain so they were imported from Spain. If there were a psychologocal affect we wound expect to see wild mood swings and reversals, incoherent thinking and megalomania in places where yams are grown and eaten - such as the American South.

Oh (expletive)

Well crap, got my paper on Hitler in the bag then...

Adolf Hitler, one of the greatest mass murderers in history, is remembered by his secretary as a kind and paternal man who ate little aside from mashed potato and passionately loved his dog. cite

Thank you AP, proof that the US education system is far behind where it should be in history. I'm more and more convinced of it every day.

Not really, I wasn't taught much about American Presidents so why should Americans be taught about British Kings?

Henry VII was a particularly influential king - with the break with the Catholic Church, dissolution of the monasteries and establishment of a state religion - all so that he could get his own way and all enforced with countless executions.

It's one of the reasons I am not a monarchist and object strongly to the idea of people claiming divine right.
