So it's about that time. My parents will fly in for the Holidays and like clockwork we will go out to eat at Hayble's. Let me explain Haybles for those who don't know.

Take a church. Stuff it into the basement of some 1950's cold war era professional building, and slap one silly sign on the post out at the street which would never be equated with food, and you have Hayble's Hearth.

Let me put it another way. If Jesus owned a restaurant, this would be it.

Now hold up, before you think I'm going to bash this place just because table 13 is known as Mose's corner. I love this place. The food is perhaps the best in Greensboro. It's just, well... I feel like a sinner every time I walk in.

Oh, I know I'm lacking the WWJD bracelet and my Jesus World Tour 1994 T-Shirt, but how do they know??? It's the look they give ya! It's like they have radar for sinners or something. (Sin-Dar?) They're always nice, but it's not exactly my crowd if you know what I mean? I won't even tell you about the time I went in there after getting pink hi-lites in my hair. Lets just say about 6 pacemakers went off when entering into the room.

So enough about me. Hayble's which is ironically located in the gayest part of Greensboro or otherwise known as the UNCG artsy fartsy area is only open on some very weird hours. Something like Wednesdays after 4 before 5 and only on odd calendar days. So its always best to call. If you can actually get over there when they are open it's the best home cooked meal in the world. The staff is so-o hum-diddly friendly, and the retro 60s atmosphere is perhaps the coolest thing of all. (I don't think they meant it, it just is that old)

My favorites include there salads, polska sausage, and kraut, and homemade macaroni. Unlimited bread rolls, and their never-ending ice tea. Prices aren't bad, and the bible verses are at least tolerable for us heathens. Proof positive Jesus never tasted so good.

Note: They've moved to a new location since this article was written:

Liv, thanks for your 2005 article on Hayble's Hearth. You've done a masterful job of capturing the essence of the place. I've been a Greensboro resident since 1993 and have frequented Hayble's many times and I've never seen anyone write nor heard anyone say anything in description of the place that was more true (and humorous) than you did in your article. Thanks for sharing the excellence and character of a true Greensboro landmark (for those determined enough to find it).

FYI, I'm a big believer in the Country Fried Steak, hot buttered apples, turnip greens, corn bread, and sweet tea as part of a well balanced Chef's special.

Sincerely,
Kurtis Gentry

I used to work there many years ago. The Haybles were very nice people to work for.
Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you "choose" to respond to it.

I just wonder what caused them to choose such an odd location for a restaurant.

Is this place still open? I've never heard of it.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second,it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

THIS IS THE MOST WONDERFUL RESTAURANT. THE FOOD IS SOOOOOOOO GOOD AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT FOR IT. THE MENU IS ELABORATE, TOO. THIS IS NEAR UNC-G ON SPRING GARDEN STREET ACROSS FROM TIME-WARNER. TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT. I ENTERED FOR A THANKSGIVING GIVE-AWAY AND WON A TURKEY WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS! THERE IS SUCH A WARM SPIRIT IN THE PLACE YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY FEEL WELCOME. CAN'T PRAISE IT ENOUGH.

So they've finally re-opened at a new location. Ironically the old location of Hayble's is now a Mosque I think. There's some karma for ya.... any who... new address:

My wife and I went out there last night. It was a nice visit. The food was delivered in a timely manner, it was hot, and didn't cost much at all.

For anyone who is interested, the place has a small separate room for group dinners. I liked it. Wish I'd had room for a key lime pie dessert.
