North Carolina Chupacabra on the loose.

by Liv | Published on June 4th, 2006, 1:43 pm | Greensboro
This National Geographic article is a few months old, but I just ran across it online. I'm not sure if this is the same mystery animal that was big news about a year ago near Asheboro, but combine this with the two tongue cat, and North Carolina has some weird animals. The best part of the article is the quote:

"It's a mythical Chupacabras, a dog-like creature that stealthily roam at night and suck the blood from goats in a vampire fashion."

Even worse is that the people at the company who spotted this animal, can't decide to feed it or shoot it and stuff it.

that's not the chupacabra; i have seen the real chupacabra and it's crackin terrifying. it runs on 2 legs, is only a couple feet tall, and has the most disturbingly haunting glowing eyes. god i hope i never see it again.

About a year ago my brother and I wittnessed a similar creature at Raven Rock North Carolina. It ran up on four legs, and then stood on two legs and looked at us. Its face resembled that of a wolf, and legs of a kangaroo; before running off into the woods!

Stop smoking that crap and it shouldn't be a problem. You actually expect somebody to buy that story !?

If you discount something as just foolish, you may be missing on a great discovery. Unless you have proof to contradict what someone claims to have witness, insulting that person only makes your point look weaker.

What we shoud be looking for is consistency.
1- The description of "chupacabra" given here (short, two legged gait, glowing eyes) matches that I've hear from witnesses in other places.

2- The killings of animals such as pitbulls, know for their fierce character, of house cats, know for their agility is telling us that whatever "chupacabra" is, is not a common wild animal. It has to be something with almost hypnotic powers to swiftly make the kills without a fight. It is quite intelligent.

3- The other important point is the blood sucking. These animal attck have in commom that they were suck dry of blood and it was done without making a mess. No vampire bat or leech is able to suck the liters of blood that a dog, goat, cat or even a chiken has. Moreover, coyotes or similar mammal, are carnivores and would eat the flesh, not the blood.

History is full of bright people ridiculed for their unconventional positions, Galileo and Columbus for example, so instead of starting a witch hunt, lets examine the evidences with an open mind and we might find there is more out there.

I live in Elizabeth City North Carolina and in the past few days there have been quite a few sightings of what some people think is the Chupacabra. Their have been aniamals found dead around my area with three holes in them and they are drained of blood but no meat was eaten at all and in a neighborhood close to mine three cats have gone missing in the past few days. From what people say when they see it, it has green glowing eyes in the dark and has four legs but when it stands up on its hind legs they say its around 4-5 feet tall. Their have also been weird tracks with three holes in the ground where people say they saw it. Some people have even said when they were hunting they found a bear a a deer with the three holes in them and drained of blood but im not sure if that is true. Im just worried it will get ahold of a person or small child and kill them. Also their was a report of a Chupacabra being caught in Newland a area in my county back in the 80's but im really not sure if all this is factual. Their is also a theory going around in Elizabeth City that the National Wild Life Service let it loose in a area in Elizabeth City called the two mile desert. They have previously let go rattlesnakes and coyotes loose in that area to see if they could adapt to our enviroment but I hightly dought if they caught one they would let it go where it could come into contact with humans or let it go at all.

The supposed chupacabra of Northeastern, NC (Elizabeth City) was nothing but a teenager in a costumer running around at night scaring people. It was all part of a senior prank. Some people will believe anything. There were hunters being ticketed for trying to hunt this thing. Funny as it was, the boy could have gotten hurt. These rednecks out this way are so caught up with hunting that they were not taking into regards the human lives that could have been hurt.

Tim do you go to Northeastern or Pasquotank(GO P-TANK!)? If you knew it was a senior prank you go to one of these schools. Me and my friends went looking for it. We drove around South Mills and smoked a couple blunts. It was fun but we didnt find anything.

Hi. I want to get help in collecting eyewitness stories about the recent sightings. The Pasquotank sheriff told me in Jan. that what people saw was either "a coyote with mange", or "a sow bear". From what I've been told, it was neither. I want to talk to those who've seen this creature(s), and I'd really like to get in touch with anyone who has pictures of the tracks, or the animals that have been killed. As for it being "real" or not-it was just about 25 years ago that the giant squid was still believed to be a myth-now it is accepted as a real animal. I want to collect evidence about the sightings and animal killings. Please, contact me at [email protected] You don't have to give your full names, just please help me gather evidence. There are three main types of the animal, and they can be very dangerous. I will not scoff at you, I want to get to the truth, and I need your help. Thank-you.

I can't believe I'm positing about this... But I saw what I think this post is describing.

Early one morning last week I was on the "Future 840" bypass heading towards I-40 when from out of the woods shot this coyote-like animal. It had what I would describe as a long snout and mottled coat looking suspiciously like the picture Liv posted (but with thicker hair).

3 other cars were on the road with me and we all just came to a stop. I've not seen many things dart as quickly across 4 lanes as this thing did. If it hadn't slightly changed course I probably wouldn't have gotten as good a look at it as I did. Strange stuff. I definitely think its a coyote of some kind.

You're very likely correct

Mangy coyote

National Geographic
Now, just in time for Halloween, scientists say they can explain the stories with the help of evolutionary theory.

Flesh-and-blood chupacabras have allegedly been found as recently as June—making the monsters eminently more accessible for study than, say, the Loch Ness monster or Bigfoot. (See "Bigfoot Hoax: 'Body' Is Rubber Suit.")

In almost all these cases, the monsters have turned out to be coyotes suffering from very severe cases of mange, a painful, potentially fatal skin disease that can cause the animals' hair to fall out and skin to shrivel, among other symptoms. (Related: "'Balding' Bears: Mangy Mystery in Florida.")

For some scientists, this explanation for supposed chupacabras is sufficient. "I don't think we need to look any further or to think that there's yet some other explanation for these observations," said Barry OConnor, a University of Michigan entomologist who has studied Sarcoptes scabiei, the parasite that causes mange.

Likewise, wildlife-disease specialist Kevin Keel has seen images of an alleged chupacabra corpse and clearly recognized it as a coyote, but said he could imagine how others might not.

...

The University of Michigan's OConnor speculates that the mite passed from humans to domestic dogs, and then on to coyotes, foxes, and wolves in the wild.

His research suggests that the reason for the dramatically different responses is that humans and other primates have lived with the Sarcoptes mite for much of their evolutionary history, while other animals have not.

"Primates are the original hosts" of the mite, OConnor said. "Our evolutionary history with the mites help us to keep [scabies] in check so that it doesn't get out of hand like it does when it gets into [other] animals."

In other words, humans have evolved to the point where our immune systems can neutralize the infection before the infection neutralizes us.

The mites too have been evolving, suggested the University of Georgia's Keel. The parasite has had time to optimize its attack on humans so as not to kill us, which would eliminate our usefulness to the mites, he said.

In nonhuman animals, Sarcoptes hasn't figured out that balance yet. In coyotes, for example, the reaction can be so severe that it causes hair to fall out and blood vessels to constrict, adding to a general fatigue and even exhaustion
