It's been a few years since I last visited Charleston, SC. And that was at about the worst time of year to do it -- May. My one hard rule for vacationing that I've devised so far: never go to the coast of South Carolina in May. You WILL suffer due to close proximity to 37 million motorcycles. Sorry... I digress early sometimes.

Anyway... Charleston. It has an AWFUL lot of the things one might want for a fun vacation: historic sites to visit (Fort Sumter, Patriot's Point, the historic district near the waterfront). shopping (terrific shops all up and down Market St) dining (Charleston Crab House and Bubba Gump are my favorites) and just flat-out beautiful scenery.

On the times I've been to vacation there, I've always stayed on the south end of the area. There's a Holiday Inn Express on US 17 that's an OK place to crash after a long day of touring/shopping. And when we stayed at the Holiday Inn tower just south of the river -- that was less than thrilling. But it was a great location. I'd actually expect that staying at a B&B would be a better choice if you can manage it.

But regardless of the place you stay -- that city is one of the nicest places to visit ANYWHERE on the Eastern Seaboard that I know of.

I took two different Scout units (Cubs and Boys) to spend some time "camping" in the crew quarters of the USS Yorktown. I don't consider those trips among my vacations to Charleston, because I really didn't get a chance to SEE the town as such.

But I have to say -- the Patriot's Point Naval Museum is a dream trip for a history buff. And getting to see all the stuff on the ship that is off the regular public tours (the quarters that are set aside for group stays, watching videos reserved for the groups, etc) -- that's a big thrill all by itself.

I worked in Charleston for a week before I worked at this current job... Unfortunately the seagulls crapped on me all week... So I hated the place.
