Vuvuzelas: brings back memories

They are a big part of the World Cup coverage these days, these fan toys called vuvuzelas. I've had to read about them, and have a look at these things to be sure. But we had them when I was a kid, and my family took me to watch Duke football games -- back when Duke football was GOOD.

They didn't call them by that name, though. They were just plastic horns. And they appeared at all college football games, and no one cared, because they were just another way for the fans to make noise. Odd, that...

I just found out a friend of mine in SA is probably sending me one. I will be sure and bring it to all my meetings at work.

At least you pronounce it correctly.

I heard someone on the radio trying to be "in the know" but he made it very obvious that he's not watching World Cup when he referred to the vuvuzela as "vooVOOZehLuh" as opposed to "voovooZEHluh"

I finally got to hear the blasted things in action at the Cup. Fort a second, I thought there was some screw-up in the sound transmission. The thing was never that widespread in my experience at the football games in my youth. That would have really screwed with visiting teams, I bet.

It's a kind of a same I don't have my old horn from back then. Be cool to pull it out and try it out. In my back yard. At midnight.

We had the stadium horns when I was in high school, but instead of performing the B-flat concerto, it was more like a few quick blasts. Not sure if it was a honk honk honk or a toot toot toot. Sometimes it was one blast for a couple of seconds, but nowhere near the "buzz without ceasing."

I may never become completely fluent in French... but I figured out this headline:

Il arrive à l’hôpital avec une vuvuzela dans le... derrière

=

He arrived at the hospital with a vuvuzela in the ... behind

At the end of the match between South Africa and Uruguay, a man went to the hospital with ... vuvuzela in the behind. And he was no longer able to remove ... cite
