Neither. It's not important at all. Commerce hasn't come to a stop because our speed limits aren't in kilometers. All international business is done in meterics regardless of the country of origin or destination.

The system that is used the most often is more efficient. All US companies involved in international sale use metric when trading.

While metric is far simpler for engineering calculations it's the conversions that cause problems - Like the Gimli plane crash.

Or the loss of a125,000,000 Mars Orbiter

The sooner the US gets in line with the rest of the world, the better.

Any company or government institution not using metric is just asking for trouble. We tried to convert the public to mettric back in the 70's and it failed miserably.

Science has used metric for years. The general public will never accept it though.

Never? They did in the UK who were likely more attached to their system of measurements than Americans who after all got them second hand (and short changed many of them)

It's unpopular in the short term so governments, that might agree that it's a good thing, don't like to propose it.
